This is the "go-to" page for our members. Here you will find information on things like classes, membership forms, upcoming events etc. It will be kept as up to date as humanly possible.
We are planning on offering an assortment of classes this year in the hopes that we will have something for everyone. Our first class will be an Embellished Jacket Class held on February 6th, 2010 at the Argonne Library from 10 4 p.m. Class size is limited to 10 people, so please sign up soon! Contact Kathy Kjeldgaard at 226-0819 or Manda Lyghts at 924-3172 for a supply list.
We will be offering a series of classes out of Nancy Halvorsen’s new book, Sew Necessary. Nancy’s company has offered the purchase of the book at wholesale price to our guild members who sign up for any of the classes. Please join us in making a sewing basket, needle wallet, pincushions or scissor fobs & chatelaines, dates to be determined.
You may remember the fat-quarter purse Ethel Schuerman brought to show and tell last April she has graciously agreed to teach us all how to make it. Look for this class to be scheduled in the spring.
We are also planning on having a ‘machine quilting on a regular machine’ class, as well as paper piecing this year. Please check your newsletters for upcoming class dates and times. Space will be limited in some classes and we will need you to register to receive a supply list prior to any class being offered.
Questions or suggestions? Please feel free to contact Manda Lyghts (924-3172) or Kathy Kjeldgaard (226-0819). We hope to see all of you this year at one class or another! ~~Manda & Kathy, Classes Committee

Retreat (my definition): a period away from normal activities, devoted in this example, to quilting and the enjoyment of sharing time with fellow quilters.
Recently I learned that the Valley Assembly Quilters have regularly scheduled quilt retreats. These ladies set aside and dedicate two days for retreating. They meet from 9AM 9PM, breaking to spend the night at their homes, return the following day to sew or quilt until 9PM. Another group, the Valley Spoolers, schedules a monthly day-long retreat. These retreats are fun, simple ways to get away without much disruption to family life. I usually attend a retreat which lasts for three days at a camp about an hour’s drive north of Spokane. At times this retreat seems like it takes much planning and work. Day long retreats are becoming more attractive to me The best time I have had at a “quilt retreat” was when my daughter and I planned a monthly day for quilting. We took turns meeting at each other’s home, prepared something special for lunch, met early and stayed late. Our husbands understood our desire for this together time and encouraged us to keep the monthly commitment. We accomplished much in those hours, both in completing projects and enriching our mother/daughter bond. My daughter has moved away and we both miss those together times.

Hi All, It’s going to be a very happy new year for our library. I made some unbelievable good purchases from Pam Clarke’s personal library. It says a lot about Pam that she continues to do so much for the quilting community even though her shop is, sadly, closed. Log Cabin Dry Goods will be sorely missed. Here are the new titles you’ll be seeing at February’s meeting.
All seven video classes in Pam’s wonderful “Designs with Lines” series. Can you believe it? The titles are “Fearless Beginnings”, “Designs with Lines”, “More Designs with Lines”, “Borderlines”, “Pin Basting for the Longarm”, “Background Frenzy”, and “Easy Elegant Applique”. Pam’s innovative techniques are just as useful for your home sewing machine as they are for longarm quilting. These videos are worth their weight in gold!
1000 Great Quilt Blocks by Maggi McCormick Gordon - That’s right. A Thousand!
Dutch Treat: 196 Applique Blocks inspired by Delft Designs by Judy Gordon. Do you remember the “Delft Tiles” quilt that won Best in Show at the 2007 WSQ Quilt Show? It was an absolute masterpiece made by Jamie Grant of Hamilton, Montana. This is the book she used. A real treasure for our library.
100 Applique Quilt Patterns by Jan Halgrimson. This is the book that Pam Clarke used for inspiration for her 2007 and 2008 Block of the Month quilts. It’s so neat that we’re going to have these wonderful applique designs available to us whenever we need to get creative. A real find
Quilting Through Life by Julia Teters Zeigler. A nice blend of good quilt patterns and sweet philosophy. That Patchwork Place has done it again!
Celebrate the Tradition with C & T Publishing edited by Liz Aneloski and Joyce Lytle. When C & T Publishing hit their 20 year mark they gathered together all their great authors -- and that’s pretty much every famous quilt artist being published -- to design commemorative blocks. The blocks are great and the remarkable history is even better. This one is very fun.
The Quilters Guild Collection edited by Bridget Long. I don’t usually care for European or British quilt books but I’ll have to make and exception on this one. It’s a valuable addition in our quilt history category. This book showcases the Quilters’ Guild Heritage Collection -- the largest collection of patchwork and quilting in the United Kingdom. Some of the quilts go back to the early 1700’s.
Easy Bias-Covered Curves by Wendy Hill. Easy, dramatic designs making circles without the work and hassle of curved piecing.
Summertime Quilts: Fresh Designs in Chenille by Patti Eaton. What’s cozier than chenille? Pretty uses for an old favorite.
Pillow Party by Pamela Lindquist. Make heaps of pillows. A great use for those orphan blocks. Pretty illustrations.
Crowning Glories by Lerlene Nevaril. One simple block -- the arrow crown block -- with 1000’s of possibilities. This one really gets the old creative juices flowing.
Square Deal by Nancy Mahoney. Simple quilts from squares and rectangles. Brand new book!
There they are. As always, call me if you’d like to reserve any of these titles. 2009 was a busy year for the library. Sixty books were added and 82 were withdrawn.
Our circulation was a whopping 250 items. Our book sale was very successful and you can look forward to more. Darleene Boller and I have gotten to know so many of you better than we would have if we hadn’t taken on this job. It’s been very rewarding. Thank you all so much for your great support. Keep those donations rolling in and let’s all keep checking out books!
