General Meeting - August 2008
Suzi Hokonson
Many of you have heard of Suzi Hokonson, a local quilt artist and fabric historian. In 1979, she developed a wonderful method for mounting quilt blocks or other needlework so it can be easily displayed. Suzi is the author of two books, Suzi’s Hang Art and Suzi’s Quilted Logs, and is an American Quilter’s Society certified appraiser.
Graduating from Washington State University with a BA in Education, Suzi taught school as a substitute teacher in Pennsylvania, Oregon and Washington for ten years. After taking a quilt class from Roberta Horton in 1978, she turned her attentions to working with fabrics, developed her textile mounting technique, and started her own business. You can view samples of textiles displayed using her innovative method on her website, suzishangart.com
Suzi continues to work with children through Spokane District 81’s Visiting Artist Program, and has worked with Laotian/Hmong women through a WSU grant, teaching them to mount their embroideries to increase the marketability of their textiles. She has also worked with several other ethnic groups, including the Seminole tribe and local American Indian tribes. Plus I know she is an avid collector of vintage quilting cottons and other textiles.
Attend the SVQG General Meeting on August 5 to see for yourself the amazing variety of textile art done by Suzi Hokonson.
We meet at 7:00, 6:30 is social hour at the Valley Assembly of God, 15618 E. Broadway, Spokane Valley, WA. (Corner of Sullivan and Broadway, across from Michael's and Toys R Us)
